What is this site about?

The Information Portal to European Sites of Remembrance is part of the permanent exhibition at the   Information Centre   of the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin. With its selection of memorials and museums, the portal provides an insight into how the victims of the Second World War, of National Socialist crimes and particularly the victims of the Holocaust are commemorated throughout Europe.

Why is there an information portal about memorials?

On June 25th, 1999, the German Bundestag passed a resolution to build the Holocaust Memorial. The resolution included the decision to establish an Information Centre that would »provide details on the victims commemorated and the historical memorial sites«. The information portal complies with this obligation.

Does the portal contain all sites of remembrance in Europe?

No. First of all, that would not be possible due to the sheer amount of memorials in Europe. Second, displaying all memorials would reduce the portal’s clarity. A variety of smaller memorials is presented next to the most important historic and the best-known sites of remembrance. Still, our ambition is not to build a comprehensive database of all Holocaust memorials, but to present – with the help of specific examples – the diversity of the memorial landscape in Europe and how it has changed over the decades.

About the geographical names …

Just like in the exhibition at the Information Centre, we use the historical geographical name when dealing with the historical context of a specific site, and the current name when writing about the present. The relevant versions of the names are mentioned in the texts.

How can I search for a memorial site?

There are three ways to search for a specific memorial site: the map of Europe, the index, and the search function; in the latter you can search for geographical names and for words included in the names of the memorial sites.
