• Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Uman - Suhoy Yar
A memorial was set up near the Ukrainian city of Uman, around 180 kilometres south of Kiev, on the Suhoy Yar site of mass shootings to honour the Jews who were murdered there between 1941 and 1942.

In 1939, there were about 13,000 Jews living in Uman. On August 1, 1941, the German Wehrmacht took the city. The army was followed by units of SS Einsatzgruppe C (mobile killing squad). Part of the Jewish population had previously been able to flee. The Einsatzkommando 5 (mobile killing unit) of Einsatzgruppe C planned to murder Uman's approximately 8,000 Jews on September 22 and 23, 1941. However, members of Ukrainian militia and Wehrmacht soldiers began assaulting the Jews of Uman already on September 21: they haphazardly beat Jews to death, demolished apartments and looted Jewish property. Many Jews fled in the fear that this was only the beginning of further atrocities. Einsatzkommando 5 therefore stated in its report that it shot »only« about 1,400 Jews in this »Aktion«. Further killing operations probably followed on October 8, 1941 and in April 1942, during which members of Einsatzgruppe C murdered several thousands of Jews.

The number of Jews murdered in Uman remains unclear: the Einsatzgruppe report states that 1,400 Jews from Uman were shot. According to estimates, a further 6,000 Jews from Uman were murdered, many of them on October 8, 1941. Some sources indicate that in total, there were between 14,000 and 17,000 Jewish victims; others state that there were up to 28,000 victims.
A memorial to the murdered Jews of Uman was set up at one of the sites of mass shootings, Suhoy Yar. Commemorative ceremonies take place there annually on October 8, the anniversary of the mass shooting at Suhoy Yar, as well as on May 9 - »Victory Day«.
